Every lesson is built from the same four elements: a question worth thinking about, an investigation, clear teaching, and the chance to rethink.

Spark the thinking
Can you make the shadow bigger?

Before we explain, children predict what will happen and share their reasoning. Everyone has an idea to contribute and something to find out.
Explore and test
Test the prediction.

Children test their predictions with a carefully guided investigation. They move the flashlight, keep the block and screen still, and compare the shadows they trace.
Teach into their thinking
Explain the science.

The teacher explains the science, connecting it to children's predictions and observations. The explanation now answers a question they have been working on.
Return, rethink and apply
Revisit the first idea.

Children revisit their first prediction and explain what they would change and why. They then use what they've learned to tackle another shadow challenge.

Designed by a teacher, for teachers.

I'm Vicky Brooks. I taught for over a decade, was named Teacher of the Year in 2015/16, and now design curriculum full time.

I hold a BA (Hons) in Education and a PGCE. Every unit starts from what children already think, then gives them something worth figuring out, teaches the idea clearly and asks them to use it.
